WHAT'S ON TAP
HOT OFF THE PRESS
Retail sales hit $75B
Retail sales rose 1.2% M/M in August to $74.6B on equal growth in volumes, resuming its upward trajectory…

… driven mainly by strength in Ontario and BC, with Toronto and Vancouver rising 4% and 2% respectively - reversing losses from last month.

At the category level, sales were up in all sectors - led by automotive gains (+1.2%), as new car sales more than offset a pullback at used car dealers…

… which helped discretionary wallet share hold steady at 77% for the third month straight. While new car sales are generally a sign of confidence…

… and preliminary estimates call for another 0.7% bump to retail sales in September, we’ll be watching the breakdown to assess the durability of consumer spending from here.
Couche-Tard bids $8B for Cumberland
Alimentation Couche-Tard (ATD) has offered up to $8B for Cumberland Farms, well below its targeted IPO valuation of ~$9B - which was pulled due to challenging market conditions. The deal would expand the store network by ~20%…

… with a highly similar gross profit mix (fuel and merchandise).

In the fuel business, the margin profile of both firms is comparable…

… while the merchandising business could have upside if Couche-Tard is able to apply its existing playbook in a deal scenario…

… which the company has proven repeatedly, with a long track record of sub-9x EBITDA deals that target synergies of 30-60% of acquired EBITDA post-close.

What would drive capital from energy to telecom?
Energy has dramatically outperformed YTD, running at over 4x the index…

… and returning 126% since 2024 versus the total market at 85%, second only to materials (mining) at 162%.

While the geopolitical backdrop remains supportive of excess cash generation from the energy sector for now…

… any form of conflict resolution would likely reverse some of that outperformance, underscoring the volatility that’s characteristic of the sector.

Telecom has historically been on the other end of the volatility spectrum, though the sector has massively underperformed the broader market in recent years…

… due to a confluence of structural challenges, including rising rates (hits the debt load and cash flow duration) and sluggish population growth…

… which has driven steady pricing pressure alongside intense competition between the major carriers…

… though an immigration restart would likely moderate that headwind. With the group trading at trough multiples…

… any form of geopolitical cooling could create the conditions for a rotation trade, given it would send inflation and rates in the opposite direction (all else equal).

Logan Energy (LGN) closed up 12% today on rumours the company is exploring a sale, which puts ~17 kboe/d of Montney-focused production on the table…

… with plans to nearly double that through expansion at its Simonette asset, supported by current balance sheet capacity…

… and operational improvements that have driven netback margins higher over time.

With LGN’s primary growth asset situated near a recent Shell acquisition, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them take a swing - though others like Ovintiv and Cenovus are also nearby. Let’s see how it plays out.
